Is “Just Enough” Really Enough?
People earning RM3,000 may be willing to take a chance.
People earning RM20,000 may be able to afford a setback.
But sometimes, the people who feel most stuck are those earning around RM5,000–RM6,000.
You’re not struggling, but you’re not really moving forward either.
Every month, your salary is just enough for the car instalment, housing loan, daily expenses and maybe a few good meals.
At the end of the month, there’s still a little left.
And sometimes, that “little bit left” becomes the reason we’re afraid to make a change.
It’s not that you don’t want something better.
You’ve simply calculated the risk:
“What if I try something new and fail?”
“What if I lose the comfortable life I already have?”
This reminds me of my own story.
I used to work for an IT company earning only RM1,700 per month.
After working there for about a year, I asked one of my seniors:
“Bro, you’ve been here for so many years. How much are you earning now?”
He thought for a moment and replied:
“Maybe RM1,000–RM2,000 more than you.”
He had worked there for seven or eight years.
And the difference was only RM1,000–RM2,000.
I looked across the office at the manager.
Meetings every day. Documents to sign. Pressure and responsibilities.
Then I realised:
That room could be where I would be 10 years later.
And that extra RM1,000–RM2,000 could be the price of those 10 years.
I didn’t say anything that day.
Three months later, I left.
Sometimes, what stops us from changing isn’t a lack of money.
It’s having “just enough.”
Enough to survive.
Enough to stay comfortable.
But perhaps not enough to build the future you really want.
So ask yourself:
If I continue on the same path for another 5 or 10 years, where will I be?
And perhaps an even more important question:
If your “just enough” salary disappeared tomorrow, how long could you survive?
